Our Humanitarian Emergency Relief Work

There was failure of rains in the region for three consecutive seasons coupled with constant militia attacks and fighting in the neighboring Somalia making the nomadic pastoralist impossible to maintain their normal livelihood. The hazard and shocks caused by the fights and drought resulting poverty making the communities loss assets, livestock, leading to poverty and serious food consumption deficit leading them destitution and exposed to risk. While responding to this disaster, Waso Resource Development Agency (WARDA) conducted a survey aimed at identifying the most vulnerable areas in the region and the needy communities. The organization is grateful to all those who participated in this endeavor to this noble course of feeding the vulnerable members of the communities in the horn of African region during this emergency relief food distribution. The community appreciated the efforts made by WARDA in supporting them during these trying times. The project involved community leaders from crosscutting sections and tribes thus bringing harmony and understanding among community leaders and their constituents. The project helped the community recover from the stress of poverty and famine. Many children were saved from starvation and hunger. According to the community elders the ration brought food security for a short but very important period of high needs the project had various challenges, manageable and unmanageable alike. The issue of transportation and accessing communities that were living in far flung remote regions was enormous. WARDA depends entirely on volunteers and well-wishing donors and their time is always a challenge. With negotiations, this was managed well. Insecurity was the most unmanageable part of the project. Somalia’s lawlessness has spilled too many parts of the region where WARDA works. We have relied on community leaders to help us monitor the insecurity situations and announcements. WARDA has distributed for last 4 years a total of 2,650 tons of relief food comprising of Rice, Cooking Oil, Sugar, Dates, wheat flour, water and Nan food items. During this period we reached more than 148,500 household.
