Health & Nutrition

Objective: To improve the health, nutrition and survival of vulnerable children under the age of five as well as pregnant women and Lactating mothers.

Globally, undernutrition is the greatest risk to child survival and the basic cause of nearly half of all child deaths. Good nutrition in the first 1,000 days has been found to ensure healthy development by building a strong immune system thus increasing a child’s chances of survival.

According to a report released on January 2021 by Wajir County National drought management Authority(NDMA) the proportion of children with MUAC measurement of between 125 to 134mm increased from 18% in December 2020 to 23% in January,2021. This increase in the number of children with moderate malnutrition is as a result of the decline in milk consumption and production and hence number of children with moderate malnutrition in the County continue increasing due to declining milk consumption and poor dietary diversity.

The report also indicated that there  was an outbreak of measles in January 2021 with a total of 35 cases line listed. Affected sub-counties include Tarbaj, Wajir East and Wajir South sub-counties. Visceral leishmaniosis (Kaalzar) outbreak has also been reported with a total of 7 cases line listed in Wajir West and Eldas sub-counties
