Food Security & Livelihood

Due to natural factors such as climate change and recurrent drought that have occasioned the loss of livelihood and family asset of pastoralist communities WARDA explores opportunities for families to restore household food security and family income through livelihood approach that foster resilience and sustainable livelihoods.

WARDA has managed to respond and intervene in this thematic area through the following intervention:

  • Provide food relief to thousands of families during humanitarian emergency and Ramadhan period reaching more 247 502 reached with food distribution
  • Destocked livestock were slaughtered and meat supplied to 3000 vulnerable families reaching 18,000 persons.
  • 40 sewing machines were issued to benefit over 80 teenage girls.
  • Destocked livestock specially shoats were slaughtered and meat supplied to 3000 vulnerable families reaching 18,000 persons during the 2011 drought.

In collaboration with department of vetenary services  Wajir WARDA Vaccinated and distributed 1542 shoats to the 514 registered beneficiaries identified by the community elders. A further 315 females and 199 male were trained on basic livestock management, 10 community based animal health workers were also trained to provide the required veterinary services to the restocked beneficiaries and the other community members. The Animal health workers  were further equipped with basic tool kit containing veterinary drugs among other essential items
